  • Gear Oil Question

I just bought my 79XS1100 Special. I don't have a gear oil dipstick. Can someone tell me how to check it without one? I am going on a ride tomorrow and need to ensure it is OK.
    Thanks

    Re: Gear Oil Question

You'll need a dipstick to check the level - if you don't have one, there is a tech-tip here on the dimensions you need:

Might be a good time to just drain it and put the measured amount of new gear oil in, if it hasn't been changed in a while.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

If you just got the bike a complete fluids change is in order. I would just change out the middle and final drive oils. Then you can put in the measured amounts and know that there's enough and that it's the right type and in good condition. I would change ALL the fluids on any bike I just acquired. That way I know what I got and when to change it again. Start your maintenance schedule.
