  • Think I messed up

I took the carbs out to try to correct my #2 rich problem by more thorough cleaning. I only worked on 1 and 2 as 3 and 4 were no prblem and I had missed the float valve screens the first time on 1&2.
I saw the air pilot jets and thought I'd pull those and clean them too without fully realizing what they were (1st mistake). I backed them out and they really didn't seem to start backing out. So I backed them in again.

Now the bloody thing is blowing gas out both 1&2. How do I readjust those stupid air pilot jets back to normal (i am pretty sure that's my problem, just not sure)

Pilot needle starting point, 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 turns out from "lightly seated".
79 carbs the pilot screw sticks up enough to get a grip on it with your fingers to turn.
Sorta sounds like yours may have stripped threads?

As for "blowing gas out both 1&2" sounds more like a float problem, like it's getting stuck open.
Was surprised once to see gas flowing out the intake side of the carbs on my 80G with the engine running. Had been playing with different float settings to see how it would run/sound. Set em a little too low (to high letting bowls get too much fuel) and think #3 was hanging up.

I must not have 79 carbs then. The pilot jets are recessed in about a 32 of an inch. They may be stripped since they don't seem to be backing in or out. (Oh Jeeze)

As for the float issue, I checked em before I put the bowls back on and they we sitting at 37mm fromthe gasket surface. I'll be puliing the carbs in another hour or so after the coffee kicks in.

I might not be refering to the right part here after looking much closer at the drawing in the Yamaha Shop manual. The jet/screw/whatever is not show with any clarity in the breakout drawing.

It is located in the lower left hand of the air intake horn (filter side). it is brass and recessed in as mentioned earlier. Any clue as to what I am refering to?

Anyone? Anyone? Beuhler? Beuhler? (apologies to Ben Stein...)

Air pilot jet. Follow the channels and you will see that they feed air to the sides of the pilot jets. You really don't have to remove to clean them, but if the channels to the pilot jets are clogged, it would make that particular carb suck more gas.

Since you have a manual, "37mm" is a typo...?

            fromthe gasket surface
Should read, from the gasket mating surface.
If taken from the gasket surface will add over .5 mm.

While the manual says + or - 1 mm, bike may seem to run well but could be either a little rich or lean depending on float level.
Float height effects all RPM ranges.

I've not tried to remove any of the jets from inside the throatal body,
could be that there are pressed in and require a special tol for removeal.

So they are supposed to back out huh? #*&$!!! I have managed to bugger the Slot on #1 and Number 2 just spins. I guess I have to drill them out. Talk about scary.

Now I have to find the jets. Hello Andreas?

This is really cutting into my riding season.
