    Stripped Oil Filter bolt

    I've tried everything to remove the bolt which attaches the oil filter housing to the engine. The socket wrench slipped and stripped the edges. I then tried vise grips which did nothing more than flatten the edges. I can't believe that it's on that tight. Any suggestions. I'll need a replacement as well, once I get it out of there. HELP

          Isn't bike Wrenching Xsilerating?

          Okay, IF you have a Dremmel, or Grinder,or even a file, you can grind a couple of flat edges on the head of the bolt to be able to fit a wrench on it. Also, get some PB Blaster or liquid wrench to squirt around it...steel and aluminum like to fuse! There is also a gizmo called the GatorGrip wrench, now sold in Wallyworld and the like that might grab it!?

          IF that doesn't work, then just grind off the washer/head, just try to be careful not to grind into the aluminum oil filter cup! You can get replacement bolts from several online sources, Partsnmore.com as well as JCW!

          If you do trash your oil filter cup, I'll be glad to send you one I have since I don't need or use it anymore! See my tech tip in the MODS, OIL section about a spin on filter adapter!

              A 'last resort' method is to take a cold chisel, place the blade on a flat spot on the existing bolt, hold the chisel at about a 45 degree angle, and pound away at it with a hammer. (Pound in direction of removal, of course!)

              This was the way I removed my oil filter bolt when I bought my XJ in '99. Ruins the oil filter bolt, so plan to replace it. Think my replacement came from Dennis Kirk, has a larger (14mm?) head than original and I've not had a problem since.

                  I had to tack weld a socket to the head of the bolt and gently tap on it until the bolt started to turn out. Just another suggestion.

                      Drill an indentation in the head of the bolt close to the edge. Insert a punch in the indentation at a 45 degree angle and tap with a hammer in the direction of rotation.

                      It's easier with an air-hammer but a regular BFH works fine...
