  • Carbs cleaned and new Mains installed?

    Hello Again,
I was at the YAMMY dealer and the main Mechanic was at the counter parts. I picked up my new main jets and asked for some pilot jets...Main jets 147.5 and He said I wouldn't need pilots..just put new mains and it would be OK..I am putting on new individule filters and am I have read the xs files and they recommend going up in the pilot jets.. I wasn't able to get new pilots..they didn't have them>>>What should I do..chance the mechanics advice or what?????? Let me know your thoughts.
    Thanks

    no pilots carbs

    Hi,

I have a bank of these 'no pilots' carbs on my '80 SG. They are NOT the stock carbs, and the pilots are capped off with screw on caps. Consequently, I believe, the mains are quite large, mine are 145's. I tried running it with the pilot holes uncapped, the stock (42.5) pilots, and a variety of mains from 110 to 145. All situations failed miserably, so I recapped the pilot holes and went back to the 145's. Runs great like that and produces good tan plug color.

    Good luck,
    Tim

Those capped off pilots are fed by a little passage coming over from the main jet. You can still play the pilot jetsize game but you need the caps on. If you are so inclined.

I am pretty sure that the E, F, and SF have a passage between the main bore and the pilot bore. I have SH and H carbs that do not have the interconnecting passages. The pilots are also open to the gasoline without plugs. The screw-on plus were stock on the older carbies. That is NOT to say that Yamaha wouldn't have used up the surplus carbs that were on hand to produce the 80 models...
