    hi Cnuk,

Speedo noise is probably the cable; pull the inner out, and lube it with grease. Book always says to leave the top 6" alone, to avoid gettting grease in the instrument, but if it is squealing there, you have to just be careful!

The speedo head has a little brass bush where the cable turns in it; that sometimes needs a teeny drop of oil; if you get the lube up into the workings of the speedo itself, it is toast!

If the actual lube doesn't get it, the dust and fluff which sticks to the lube will see it off!

Whatever you do, be sparing with the lube.

Sounds like Derwat needs a voltmeter; that way it is easy to tell if there are too many things switched on.......

      An easy fix

I have found, the hard way, that the first to fail on the speedo, in my case at least, was the system driving the odometer. First the speedo became erratic, wouldn't settle down to any speed and just jumped all over the the dial, then I found the odometer wasn't working. When I opened it up I found the worm gear had worn out. I also found an easy fix. If you pop out the sensor for the turn signal cancellor you can see the gears and also lube them and prevent said problem.

          Check your head

          Hi Craz,
Got my bike running again this spring to find the speedo cable was broken. WTF it was the original, install the spare. Betcha your fairing throws the speedo howl right at you but my bike runs nekkid so my speedo howl was hardly noticable, bike ran 17km then the replacement drive cable broke. THIS time Mr Stupid checked the speedo head, effin' thing was damn nigh seized up. Swapped on another speedo that I had and had to buy a NEW cable too.

This howl changes if I reach back and jiggle where the cable goes into the speedo. I am sure the fairing amplifies it. It has been doing this now for about 20km.

The speedo is working fine, not erratic, or anything like that. Will take a look at it in a bit.

It was down to 0C last night when I got home....
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

Lubed up the speedo cable, and put just a touch of Lubriplate at where the cable goes into the speedo, and the noise is gone.

Also, put my new Gel-foam had grips on, new mirrors, and a Yamaha rear fender mudflap!

I have a new (to me) Gas tank coming, with emblems on it, in the same Blue as my venture set.
Signal lights now all work. Replaced the 4-way flasher.

The bike is running very well now. It pulls right to 8000rpm in 1st to 4th gears no problem, and up to 7500 or so in 5th before it starts to lug a bit.

Fuel mileage is better, but I am still burning oil out the #1&2 side. Can't see it in the day, but can smell it at highway speeds, and if I give it lots of throttle, in the dark, you can see the smoke in the headlights of whoever is behind me. It's using less than when I first got it going though.
