• Ok what the heck is it...??

On the front of the engine, down low between cylinders 2 and 3, slightly just above the oil filter, there's a thing sticking out and it's covered in oil funk..only way I can describe it is a gold-colored nipple. almost resembles a speed sensor or something like a pneumatic oil changing chuck, something you'd plug the drain line to for a quick oil change.

    SOOOOOO

    What is it?

      I dont think so

It sits way low on the front of the engine. Doesnt appear to have anything to do with the cam chain

        Hey HammerHead,

You may have already found your answer by looking at the parts fiches, but since yours is a Standard, and by the wear marks around the frame above the exhaust pipes, it looks like it might have had a full Fairing at one time, and quite often folks put on an oil cooler as well.

So...IF what you are talking about is directly above the Oil Filter Cup, then it could be an oil cooler adapter plate with the oil lines capped off??

But if you're talking half way up the head, then it's probably the cam chain tensioner, but I think you already know about that.

Now that you know how to post photos, you could show us what you're talking about, would make it more easy for us to help!

Your going to have to post a photo? I have never seen anything like what you describing on any XS11 engine. I would think that if it was a oil hose nipple that has been capped off there would be 2 of them in that area. One in and one out. The only thing down there on my engine is the horizontal pin catch that is used to hold the balanced engine and place it in the frame during the building of the bike. There's one at the back of the engine as well for the same purpose.

I think he is talking about that "tumor" just above the frame cross member, below the cam tensioner and the motor mount shaft/bolt.

Is it from the milling/casting process? Is it part of the fairing support?

              Ok, will get pics soon...

Couldnt find it on the fiches, so it's still a quandry...could be the cam chain tensioner but still not sure. Will bump this one when I get a pic

Good question. I believe this is a shot of the mystery 'part':

And here's a shot looking up at it from slightly below:

The underside of the bump is bored out part way at a fairly large diameter, then further at a smaller diameter. None of it is threaded, and it does not go anywhere. It has nothing to do with the oil coolers I have on our Standards, not does it have anything to do with fairings or fairing mounts. It is found on both Standard and Special blocks.

I have absolutely no idea what this is for.

Could it be a part of the casting used to hold/manuver the engine at the manufacturer? That's my guess.

I'm surprised at all of you!"

If you hang a Gremlin Bell from the engine motor mount bar above it, you'll catch lots of those little SOBs as they run in and out.

Pry spot? There are no pry spots! Ok, well maybe a couple, but I vote for the thing being related to the casting process.

It's a cast in boss that has a precision hole bored in it, it's used to locate the upper case half onto a fixture for machining subsequent features. MANY engines have them...

Now, what the heck is with the pipe nipple and couplings on your motor mount?

Could that be another Talbot innovation in the form of solid motor mount?
