  • Grab rail confusion

    Hi there

I am looking around for the grab rail for an '80G.

I searched the forums and found one thread where it says that the 79 special had a chrome rail, whereas all the others use an aluminum one.

I know the 78 used a different one that actually bolts through the seat.

According to the pictures section, the 80G also has a chrome rail, and the 80 special uses the aluminum one.

Just need clarification on which bars will fit my 80G. There are 2 on Ebay right now, both for 79 specials.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

    Hey CrazCnuk,

Here's what you can find in the PHotos and Ads-brochures, examples of the year of bikes/grab rails!

So...it looks to me like the 80 Standard and the 79 Specials are the same style, but haven't verified with the parts fiche!

Well, after posting and looking again, the 79Special's looks more curved near the signals than the standards!

The '79 has another bend in it where it bolts to the turn signal gusset.

So..... after all that, which will fit?

As far as I can tell, it's 80 std and that's it, neither the 79 or 81 will fit.

Another question, with the Venturer tour package, is the grab rail still used, or do the bag mounts get in the way?

I have a grab bar from a 79 special on my 80G, fits but is a bit tight getting the seat on and off. I think it looks better then the 80G rail.

Well, fromwhat I understand, the 79 special and 80G rail LOOK almost identical, just the 80 has a little less bend in it, probably so the seat isn't so tight.

I like the looks of the chrome rail (79 Special, 80G) better than the aluminum one, but I will put whichever one is supposed to be on there, if I can findone.

So what holds your tail light on?

              Hi Crazcnuk,
the cast aluminum grabrail has the tail light bolted to it. The chromed tubular grabrail does not, the tail light bolts to the license plate bracket.
So what do you have for a grabrail right now and where is your rear light mounted?

My tail light is on the fender, I have no grab rail at all.

The bike came with the king/queen with the highback that was for the (I think) Specials.

                  Hi Crazcnuk,
my '80 Special came with a KQHB seat plus the chrome steel tubular grab rail that fits it. Grab rail yours for postage if you want it.

That would be great. I was actually trying to get a different seat, as I don't think this one is actually for my bike as mine is NOT a special.

However, the freind that was interested in that XS in your town there, bought a 79 Special last week, got his licence this week, and his bike can use that bar and my seat.

He will give me his seat, and then I need a grab rail.

If you want to, find out the postage, and I can paypal you the cash, or whatever works for you.
