sticky valve

    sticky valve

    I have the bike runnining ,going to synch the carbs this weekend.I have noticed a sticky valve.You can hear that tick tick sound.I changed the oil.IS there a additive you can add to the oil to smooth this out.OR will i be looking at a head rebuild in the winter.

      Have you adjusted the timing chain?
      A leaking exhaust gasket at the manifold can make a ticking sound, also, as can the vacuum advance unit if the hose is improperly routed to the manifold instead of the port on #2 carb.

        Depending on the year/model, the tick may require a new valve shim as they cannot be adjusted mechanically. They are not hydraulic lifter so oil would have no impact. Look for threads...

        I have a tick also apparenrly in the #4 exhaust location. Use a mechanics stethescope to pinpoint the spot. It starts when the engine gets it warmed up Adjusting the chain tensioiner helped some of the noise, but not the tick!

            VALVE TICKING

            tHATS FUNNY YOU SAY THAT AS I HAVE NOTICED A SLIGHT LEAK,SO THAT MIGHT BE RELATED .I WILL CHEQUE THE VACUAM HOSE FIRST.JUST TRYING TO GET THIS BIKE TO RUN RIGHT FIRST.

              My number 4 manifold gasket doesn't exist...

              ...and therefore, I get a steady ticking sound from that header. There was a nut missing from the exhaust stud when I got it, so I spun on a quicknut I had laying in the toolbox. Quieted the bike considerably, but the tick is still very evident.It's all I can hear at 70mph, since my helmet is a hand-me-down anddoesn't fit right...the wind rushes in under it and swirls in my ears. Very uncomfortable. New helmet on the list...

              Am hoping I dont have a sticky valve issue myself. I get a one-cylinder miss over 5 grand.

                One missing header gasket equals loud clicking and a one cylinder miss over 5 grand...
