my tach jsut jumps with the vibrations of the bike, do you guys think it is the actual tach or the sending unit? the guy who sold me the bike gave me another tach but i plugged it in and it didnt even jump like the other does, which is closer to working?

    Re: tach problems

Is the bike charging? Does your headlight get brighter when you rev it from idle? Does the field coil strongly attract iron on the right engine cover, like it should when the key is on? (That at least applies to XS11's, don't know about XJ11's)

the head lamp stays pretty current, and the battery seems to hold a good charge. i havent tried to metal on engine cover yet....pretty much my tach just isnt registering the rpms.

Well, if the magnetic field is nil, you will get no charging current through any of the three phases, one of which sends pulses to the tachometer.

          the ;astest update

well after a bit more thinking and testing these are the results as of now. the headlmap does brigtten up as i rev it, my battery is not charging, i will ride it turn it off and the battery is dead. there is a magnetic feils but in my opion it is not as strong as i think it shold be, i will have to compare it with my brothers xs11.

so what should i do now? im going to take the battery to get it tested incase it has a bad cell or something.

Check your charging voltage at the battery with the bike running! Should get ~14.5 volts at 2500 rpm or a bit above. If only 12 or less, then it is definitely not charging. Could be just corroded connectors, clean them all and retest.

There's a tech tip on checking/troubleshooting the charging system. Quite often it's a fried REG/RECT! Can get a great better than OEM one from Geezer for a bit less that 1 "C" note, but higher from YAMAHA!!
