  • since MY FREIND KILLED MY "78"-----

Well, I have about really had it.

Installed the 81 special , used My 78 carbs, which, I rebuilt

with4 new carb kits from carb kit capital, purchased 4 pod air

filters also, figered this thing should fly, as, My 78 was a

    screamer !!!!!!

    NOW< ALL I CAN DO< IS 45 MPH !!!!!!!!

Been messing with it for 3 days now, compression, ok, about

    145, & hardley any variation.

Synched it, oh, also, installed new pilot screws, all set at 1 1/4.

set the clip at the middle mark. Idles fine, accelerates like its

got a anchor dragging. Just no go, any1 got any ideas ???

Is there a different ignition module, seems like it is the same 1.

Oh, did find some leakage behind the boots, took them off, & made 4 new ones, & red permatexed them back on, no leaks.

I have just about given up !!

Oh, just stripped a 82 maxim so, got some xtra parts to use.

I need some help guys, I luved My 78, it was a rocket, but,

    this sucs.

Any ideas ?? Ltr all, Andy B.

    Hey Andy,

First, which pod filters did you get? If round Emgo brand, they may be causing severe air flow disruption, you can take them off for a quick test. If you get the power back, then you know they are the cause, and you can either look for the oval ones, like the ones Trbig suggests getting from ApeRacing parts, OR..you can do the velocity stack mod, there are a couple of different types in the tech tips.

Secondly, you say you put the 81 engine in your 78 frame?? The 81 TCI/black box is NOT the same, but if you have the engine in the 78 frame, then you will want to use the 78 components. You'll need to take off the timing plate assembly and swap the cent. and vac. advance components ONTO the 81 engine. In 81, they did away with the mech Cent. Adv. and programmed it into the TCI! So...you are probably not getting any decent timing advance using the 81's timing plate which DOESN'T have the Cent. Adv. parts.

I don't know the pin outs for the 81 TCI vs. the 78, so I don't know IF you could just plug in the 81 TCI into your 78 harness?

          pods

John, these pods are from carbkitscapital.com.

They do not say emgo on the box, & they seem fairly well made.

The box says: Chrome end cap tapered air filter, & has a barcode

that has 54mm POD FILTER on it, with a number underneath that

          is= 15-0037, which is a part # I assume.

Are these the pods that You are talking about ??

Thx for the reply, & have a good 1, ltr, Andy B.

            pods

            I have the EMGO's (#12-55754) 54 mm

Look in the boot, where it goes over the mouth,
you may notice that the inlet opening is quite a bit smaller then the mouth opening, you may also notice, (as I did) that the boot is about 1/4" longer than the outer edge of the carb.

I THOUGHT that was enuf, it's NOT.

EASY TEST: remove filters, go for a ride,
if it doesn't run better, you've got another problem

if performance improves, you'll need to rework your air filters

Velocity stacks will allow you to use the filter's you've got
