I looked on all the threads, i can"t find out how to build the synch tool for 5.00 .The one without the mercury. Can you use a compression tester in place of a air pressure guage ?

Try this link.
YOu need Vacuum guages, not pressure, and while they will work, they tend to be less accurate.Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

syc. gauges
You will need a small modulator valve in the lines,or the gauge needles will jump all over the dials, gauges aren't as go as mercury tubes but they can get the job done, work way better than feeler gauges.Fastmover

Vac gauges are very accurate when damped properly, those old clunky merc tubes are obsolete and toxic and forget the various home made contraptions, they're mostly junk, sync each carb by 'eye' properly first. Buy a decent 4-dial gauge set or a compact modern merc unit later.

IMO it is more accurate than vacuum guages as works in a more sensitive manner. Individual vacuum guages do work but they can be dependant on how evenly you close the restictors. If you restrict one too much then that carb will not be allowing as much vacuum to the guage meaning you are adjusting the sync to match the mismatch.
I know that probably doesn't make much sense but it does in my head.
The downsdie of the homemade one I use is it is not very forgiving if the carbs are way out of sync. If one pulls too much too fast you get air bubbles in the line. Never sucked any oil through yet though.
Here's mine.
The smaller the tube, the less fluctuation you get. I use trans fluid in mine.1981 XJ550RH

HG, yeah you damp all vac gauges till their needles flicker only 2 or 3 mm's, you can slam on a vac-gauge set and balance the carbs within a few minutes no hassles, using only one vac- gauge takes a bit longer, but at about $15 for one gauge it'll likely be cheaper than a home made gadget anyway, but yeah on the tube & oil gadgets, if you can keep the oil levels under control, you're doin' well!

Single vac gauge synk
Hook to intake boots.
Raise fuel tank, put petcocks to prime.
Raising tank gives a little more room.
I use a small piece of 2 X 4.
Hook single gauge to #3 first to get base reading.
Synck #4 to #3
Then check that #3 did not change (the pita of using a single gauge)
Synck #1 to #2
then #2 to #3 (#1 moves when adjusting #2)
Need to recheck em all.
mro
on my single gauge set up I put a small bolt with a hose clamp holding it on the vac hose. Tightening clamp squeezes the vac hose and bolt together pinching the vac hose until needle on gauge settles down enough to read.

different animal. I made the carb sync tool that uses a vac gauge, a pvc tube, lots of vac line and an aquaruim four valve switcher thing from the pet store. It is easy to use and I noticed a big difference in the way the bike ran compared to the bread tie sync. I got my vac gauge from an auto parts store and it was about $15.00. The rest of the parts came from Home Labrynth and the pet store.
