  • spark plug and oil questions

I just finished a 1000 mile ride through E. Oregon, Central Idaho and W. Montana yesterday. Mostly 2-lane roads except for a 130 mile run @ 80mph from Missoula to Rose Lake, Idaho. The bike ran great (except for a right signal issue), but it was 100 degrees for my blast down I-90 with the tach reading 5000+. I have 2 questions:

-At that temperature and rpm is 15-40 Rotella w/a pint of Lucas Oil Additve ok, or should go to a 20-50 weight?

-The bike has NGK BP7ES plugs in it. They are 1 heat range different (hotter?) from stock. I pulled the plugs this am and after 2500 miles they look great. Should I try the stock plugs? I have been running the bike at 3-7000 feet in elevation all summer and the days have been unseasonably warm.

I would like to see the bike last as long as I do.

If the bike didn't make any extra "mechanical" noises, the oil should be fine. I use 15-40 in Daily ride, and only went to a 20-50 before a LONG BLAST through 118F desert ride. (85mph for hours on end) I use the BP6ES plugs, but if the 7's look good, it shouldn't hurt. They are COOLER than stock, IIRC. They may have some problems as it gets cooler, but they are easy to change.

Thanks for the help with oil Ray. No extra mechanical noise in the heat. Peace of mind is a good thing.

If the plugs I'm running now are 1 heat range cooler, than will I likely have to go back to the stock plugs when the weather gets cooler this fall?

      Thanks,

      Jim
