front end disassembly

I have the front end off an '82xj with the air hose crossover thingy (technical term). How does that part disassemble? I'm assuming there is some seals or something inside. Does that top ring just slide up and off, or is there some more to it?
AND--am I causing myself trouble trying to take it apart? I want to take off the headlight ears (running a fairing) and maybe even drop the tubes in the triple trees just a bit, but I could leave it alone if it's going to cause a lot of issues...

just drop the forks down and there is 2 orings on the top that seal it.after that the air assimbly can be removed easily.the ears rejust slide oyt from the tree.i just replaced my ears too.
