  • So, now that I've broken those idle mixture screws...

So, like a fool, I ignored all the advice, and wound up messing with the idle mixture screws on my '78E.

After figuring out that that's why it wouldn't idle right, etc., I ordered some screws from mikesxs, thinking they would be the ones I needed: http://www.mikesxs.net/mikesxs-fuel_...ategory_id=4.4

    On that page, it's 48-5011MK

Looking some more, I *think* this is actually what I'll need, but I wanted to check with the experts:

    http://houseofmotorcycles.bikebandit...me~XS1100E.asp

Does #34 on that diagram (Screw, Pilot, 20730-001) look like the Idle Mixture Screw that I'm thinking of?

Has anyone else done similar things on a '78E carb, and found the right idle mixture screws? If so, is this the one?

    Finally:

Is anyone have a use for these 48-5011MK Idle Mixture Screws, for a XS 650, 80-84?

Does anyone happen to have idle mixture screws for a '78E they would be willing to part with?

(yup, I done gone and broke all four of them.)

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I can't get to your second link to check it out. It looks like the 48-5011 mixture screws you ordered are correct for the 80-81 model carbs which have a blunt end, o-ring, and washer. I believe you want the 48-5009s for your early-model carbs, the ones with the fine tipped screws which are prone to breaking off. Perhaps someone who has actually ordered these from Mike's can confirm?

Have you had a go yet at getting the broken tips out?

      Hey Ken,

The thread design is closer to the 5010 style, but it doesn't have a large enough head to retain the spring like the XS11, and as you noted, the tip is NOT smooth tapered but staged!

The ones you(CDPruden) found on BikeBandit are the correct ones IF you were linking to the XS1100E model page, part #34!

This Web Site: Carbkitscapital shows a complete carb kit with the appropriate styled pilot screw along with everything else for the same price that BikeBandit is selling JUST the OEM Pilot Screw!

      XS1100 (1978) Carb Rebuild Kit
XS1100 (78) Carb Rebuild Kit. Includes the following, Float Bowl Gasket, Float Needle & Seat, Main Jet, Slow Jet, Jet Needle, Mixture Screw & Spring.

      Part #48-1964 $14.95 USD
But what's funny is that they also list just the pilot screw and say that it's for ALL YEARS, but it definitely looks like the one for the 80-81 series carbs only!

XS1100 (ALL) Carb Fuel Mixture Screw Assembly
XS1100 (ALL) Carb Fuel Mixture Screw Assembly For CV Carbs. Includes Mixture Screw, O-Ring, Washer, Spring.

      Part #48-1625 $6.00 USD
A member recently posted that they had gotten the complete kits from carb capital but they were NOT happy with the quality of the pilot screws...said they were bent or out of round????

Another option is that folks have reground their broken ones by chucking them into a drill and taken a file or grinding stone, etc. and reformed the taper tip! JAT!

I must have messed up the link a bit there; thought I had even tried it:

I started messing with the broken tips, had a bunch of trouble using a push pin and picks and such. I finally used a 1/8" drill bit from the top, think I may have made the first hole slightly larger than it should have been.

Trying the bikebandit link again: http://houseofmotorcycles.bikebandit...me~XS1100E.asp

Funny enough, I tried a couple times to get to carbkitscapital yesterday and couldn't. Wish I had checked them out before ordering these ones, anyway...

I remember seeing that -- someone complaining about the quality of it in the carbkitscapital ones... I'll have to take a look and see.

This is what one of my (broken) screws looks like, BTW:

          Thanks for the help!

            Carbkitscapital

I had broken off one of my mixture screws. I ordered one of the carb rebuild kits from carbkits capitol. The screw worked fine. I had no need for any of the other parts in the kit but figured it never hurts to have spare parts. Only trouble I had was with FEDEX. They stink!!!

The carb kit capital kits were so worth it for the float needle and seat plus the main and pilot jet , and gasket .
The idle mix screw tip was skewed off center of the body of the jet...just about a 1/4" up , the very tip was not in line with the rest of the jet . Odd . All four of mine were like that .
Did not use the jet needle either , it looked kind of rough ...

The idle jet should be fine if chucked in a lathe and trued up a bit.
Or TC's method of retipping ?

Well worth it kits though ....
A main jet from Yamaha was $10.00 alone last year ...

I just wanted to say thanks very much Underdog, TopCat and Ken -- I wound up getting the carbkitcapitol kits anyway, and the mixture screws worked just fine. I also went ahead and replaced the pilot jets and mains while I was at it (same size).

After a few attempts and messing with the colurtune, and then more attempts at synching them, I think I've got it more or less correct now. The bike feels more or less like it did when I got it, running great, idles smooth.

                Thanks again,
                Chris
