  • Stop/Turn/Tail Conversion?

    Hello,

I am in the process of customizing my '79 Special. I am using a Harley rear fender with all the holes filled in. I have two small bullet lights that will be mounted on each side. I want them to serve as stop/turn/tail lights. I found a module to achieve this but it costs $55. Do any of you brainiacs have a way to wire this for cheap? Any help would be greatly apprciated.

    Thanks,
    Scott

Use front lights and put red lenses on them.

I think you misunderstood. They have to function as brake lights (stop), turn signals (turn), and running lights (tail). Think of an older car that only has two red lights in the rear.

As for the lenses, they are clear with red LEDs in the rear and clear with orange LEDs in the front.

        were it reg. type bulb(1157's)
        Wire it like a trailer.
stop/turn = bright side of bulb
        other = run
        ---------
        LED's
        how many per side?
how many have to be lit to be bright enough for stop?

want running lights in the rear, can run wire from front.

You will need the module, a similar one is sold to convert four light systems to two light systems to convert older trailer lights to the newer vehicles and they may be a little cheaper but you will need something of the type. The normal turn signal switch on a car disconnects the brake system from the turn system on the side that is being used to indicate a turn and the motorcyle turn signal switch does not have that function.
Also remember that you must use dual filament bulbs or multiple array LED'S to achieve the two levels of brightness needed.
I have made the same conversion for my tour pack lights so that the two large lights on the pack function as stop/turn/tail lights when I have it on the bike. I initially used multiple diodes to achieve the results but for some reason they like to burn out at inconveinent moments and instead of taking the time to figure out why I just installed the module and it has worked fine for over two years now.
I bought my module at one of the local auto parts stores and it seems to me that it was about $30.

              Scott,
Just go to your local auto parts store, and buy the cheapest trailer module. You should be able to find one for about $20 to $25. Wire that into the bike, so you have the 4 wires going to the rear fender. IIRC white=ground, brown=tail light, yellow=right turn/brake, and green=left turn/brake. The easiest and most reliable way to do what you want.
