xj 1100 initial starting

Hi fellow riders,

My 1100 (XJ) when I start it cold it will crank right away and then

die. I could run the battery down from that point on to get it to

crank and run. If I let it sit for fifteen minutues or so it will do

the same thing and die. After I do crank it, it will recrank all day

long. I have tryed all the solutions I can think of. The bike has

been running for the last few months--I use sea foam additive

with each new fill up. I have read all the posts on file in the

xs chronicles. I'm missing something---does anyone recognize

this behavior and tell me how to resolve it?

Dirty carbs. Pay special close attention to the small orifice in the bottom of the float bowl.

Also, recent thread on HOW TO START A COLD BIKE, and key point was to NOT TURN THE THROTTLE while trying to start it!

It just reduces the amount of vacuum going to the enrichener circuit, and won't draw up enough fuel to help it get lit!

Like Ken said, remove the float bowls, and check the little port and make sure that it's clear, carb spray being able to squirt thru it and out the other end of the hole/tube in the bowl! IF NOT, need to clean it, using a very small wire to dislodge the gunk, spritz with cleaner, repeat until you get flow! EYE PROTECTION!

Hi Ken,

In the past the most effective approach was to pull the plugs

and clean them---put um back in and she'd fire off and run.

Today I pulled the plugs and they weren't fouled but my

air/fuel must be lean because the plugs didn't have the look that

forum posts describe them to look like. I put brand new plugs in

but didn't work this time. I have had trouble with crimped fuel

line so (post replys) I crossed over the lines to eliminate that

but I still raise the rear of the tank and check that also.

If there is no fuel in in-line filters I blow in tank to force fuel

through lines. Ken those carbs should be clean as a new

whistle---having been off and on the last few months after

they had been thoroughly cleaned inside and out.

I have been guilty of opening the throttle to keep it going on

start up, so that will cease. O K---I'll pull the carbs and clean

those ports specifically.

Hi,,,,I also have the xj100 and I second with Topcat,,,use full choke, keep the idle screw up so it idles a little high- the one under the carbs in the middle, let it run for a couple of minutes slowly turning down the choke and your good to go. These xj's need time to warm up and take off, any rushing and they all cutout and engine stops. A good new battery helps the firing mucho. If the battery is aged, I recommend a new one, the starting difference is remarkable. I also use the standard plugs,,I tried the platinums and it started much harder so I reverted back to the standard plugs and no problems.So follow the starting sequence and hope it works for you. Thanks for the reply---I have the battery covered but will

have to get use to the starting sequence. I tryed it before

this e-mail was written and it worked fine.
