    Synch tool

Motion Pro still sells the mercury stick tool for about $50. You'll never get it to run right without syncronizing.

      Hey Dawg,

PGGG recently posted about a IMHO better way to presynch/bench synch the carbs by using the holes in the top of the carb body where the butterfly closes, setting the butterflies to where they partially cover the hole closest to where the butterfly fully closes.

I've not used a colortune, it's mostly for setting the idle and pilot/idle/low rpm circuit, but I rarely run down there! I have my pilot screws turned out about 2.5 turns out, and have just left them there, but I did do a good vacuum synch, but it ran quit well with just the bench synch until I got to doing the vac. synch! Ken posted a technique to auditorially tune the pilot screws, it's in the tech tips.

When you say it runs like crap....not very descriptive in diagnostic terms for us to work with!? Does it seem to run out of power in the upper rpms, only in top gear or all gears? OR does it bog off the line but then catches like going into afterburner? Or does it come off the line okay, but then hits a flat spot before relighting in the higher rpms?

        new problems

What i mean is i haven"t rode the bike .ITS sitting just idleing.Still have to change the oil,put air in the front tire a bit of old oil by the oil cooler line ,so i"m not sure if there leaking.I will scrub the motor clean and see what appears after that.AS for the carbs it was took a long time to get it to kick over.you were saying with the needles air fuel not sure what you said exactly.MINE were only turned out two turns so i will start with that.and from there i will have to make up a sycronizing tool. This is all new to me but its a great acomplishment to get it roaring to life.ANY other tips or pre adjustments let me know.thanks guys

            Hey Dawg,

I realized that the TUNE by EAR technique that Ken Talbot had posted hadn't been made into a tech tip , so now it is, follow THIS LINK and you'll find it. As you said, you'll need to make yourself a synching tool, but once synched, then you can do this to get it tuned. Also, yes, change oil, lube up the timing components=cent. advance, vacuum advance and make sure timing plate turns/spins easily, not hanging up, etc.! Hand in there, you're getting there!

Tune by ear is pretty hit and miss, 4-1 exhausts don't help either, but you can balance the carbs by ear too, you can twist the idle screws in all different directions and nothin' much is happening, if the fuel mix is right and the carbs balanced, the clutch spins smoother then, listening inside you can hear the clutch spinning, tweak the balancing screws until the lowest amount of sound is coming from the clutch. Your carbs are now perfectly balanced. For learners a set of gauges would work better..
