Sorry about that, blackdawg, I was talking about having to tap out the emulsion tube. Every one of our carbs has one, and you get to it from the bottom. The float valve, as John notes, can be gently pulled out with pliers, being careful not to squish the end you're gripping.

      carbs a leaking

Okay ken i think i got it right now.I have to check the float needle to make sure the tip is not hard or worn.tap out the tube from the other side with a dowel.and the top right of the picture the jet with the o-ring can be pulled out gently with a pair of pliers..pull carbs apart once more, reclean and bench check for leaks and reinstall.I will be starting tommorow.

          carbs still leaking

Thanks for the tip on the tube.I"m more concered on the part with the o-ring two screws are seized in two different bodies and those philips screws always seem to strip. I have drilled out 10 screw on the carb body so far.Replaced them with robertson as i couldn"t locate allen heads. The other problem i just remembered was the screws with the spring, that is the idle screw i presume. When i put the carb back together i turned them all the way in. oh **** ,what should i do to correct this, a turn and a half out to start .Until it is time to tune it up ?

On the later-model carbs like what you have, screwing the pilots in is not such a bad thing as the needles are the blunt, less prone to breaking of, type. Back them out to about 2 turns for starters and you'll be okay.

With the trouble you're having getting screws out, I've got to ask - are you using an impact dirver? These handy devices are the best thing since sliced bread for removing phillips screws. Usibng the appropriate sized driver, a sharp tap with a hammer usually gets out a flakey screw without any stripping, no need for drilling and e-z-outs. If you haven't got one already, consider it a cheap investment.

              Help With Carbs

[REST FLOTS AND PUT NEW GAS LINES ON

GAS AT FIRST RAN OUT OF # 1 AND 2 CARBS

WHEN I TURNED THE ENG. OVER THEY QUIT RUNNING OVER but the bike will only run on the # 4 cylinder

If i cover the carb with my hand like a choke the others # 1 & 2 will run but not # 3

and if i put my finger over the air jet on the carbs 1 and 2 they will run but not # 3

              what is going on

if i reach inside of the carbs with my finger i can feel the cylinder moving up and down

if i give it gas thay move a lot .

                  Hey Neal,

Check out This Thread....members in Minn., Wisc. area . I don't know exactly where you are, but perhaps some of these folks are near and could possibly lend you a hand!?

Try posting a request in the Member's Lounge for some hands on assistance, listing your location!

Carbs are a big pain in many folk's side! Prom recently posted a good technique for verifying that the Pilot/idle circuit is open and flowing properly. Other recent posts have occured about different ways of bench synching them.

                  Wish I lived closer!

                    carbs still leaking

I disassembled the carbs once again, you get pretty good at it on the second time around.Removed all the jets ,the tube, and the body with the o-ring.Lots of crud, but the o-ring looks good .The float pin is in great shape.CLEANED out the carb body last night and the small part are soaking in a carb solution except for the pieces with rubber.I will be do the fine cleaning this morning and sanding the float pin on number four so the float moves freeley. And then its install time.I don"t have anything to bench test them.Cross your fingers.

Now you're getting htere, Balckdawg. With a bit of luck, this will be it. Be sure to get at the wee orifice way down deep in the bottom of the float bowl too. This one controls fuel flow to the enrichener (choke) circuit. If these are not clean, you'll always have trouble starting.

                        Neal,

If you are in the southern part of Wisconsin, I may be able to give you a hand. I've spent the last 18 months (work gets in the way) stripping my '80 special down to just an engine in a frame & building it back. It is almost ready to ride

I think the key to the carbs is taking your time when cleaning. There are a number of very VERY small passages that you may not realize are there. Look through the threads that describe them (especially the enrichener orifice in the bowls!!! That one surprised me until it was pointed out.) Resist the temptation to take short cuts. Give your carb cleaner a chance to soak on all the parts. A small compressor helps to blow things out. Identify all the holes & passages & make sure that when you spray carb cleaner in them that it shoots out the other end.

I didn't remove my butterfly shaft seals, so I didn't "dip" my carbs. But I did dip the jets, needles & bowls. Soaked the rest in liberal amounts of carb cleaner overnight for two or three nights & then used a compressor to try to blow out the holes. Followed by shooting more carb cleaner. I bet I used a couple cans of carb cleaner.

While you have them apart, make sure the slide diaphrams don't have any holes in them!!! If you do, you need to replace. Even a tiny hole in the diaphram will lead to "mysterious problems" when you try to ride.

                          carbs still leaking { not}

Well i put the carbs in this morning.Hooked up all the lines and installed the tank. Then i put the battery in ,flat as a pancakethats after 3 days on a charge.Old owner told me it was a new battery.I paced around the bike a few times , i just was too nervous to turn the petcock on.Well i did nothing and then two minutes later two out of four carbs starting leaking. So i shut it off feeling beaten again.A buddy stopped over and we had a few beers. I thought later i should jump start the bike see if i can get it to run. Maybe just maybe a little motion and juices flowing could help.Took the battery out of my other bike cranked sputter sputter and dies. Now the carbs are on but the fuel not pouring out. Great tried again fired right up.Sounds a little rough tried it around the block went through a couple of gears. So now it needs a little tuning and there is old oil on the header ,a little smokey so i think the oil line might be loose. And the front tire needs a little air .But it now runs thanks for all your help guys.Do you want to help me with the rest.Don"t worry i will read the threads first. The bike runs ,the bike runs right on.

Carbs Were Leaking Now There Not.still Having Problems

I have done my first carb rebuild.I had those babies apart twice but they now work ,no more leaking.I can start and run the bike it took abit to get the girl running it running ,checked gas and spark.all was fine IT needs a major tuneup.runs like crap .Now i"m not trying to be lazy is there a way to set the carbs up and then fine tune them. I have read the threads on sycronizing and color tuning.IT seems a little complicated,is there the beginer crass course for dummies. And yes topcat i did read the threads first.THE carb thread on removing and taking the carbs apart and cleaning and checking i read like the bible, bit i still had to ask queastions.

the 'breadtie' only get them close
you'll be needing to sync them carb's
it's not as complicated as it sounds

                                keep at it...you'll get it
