    mrutah1,

    You're very close.

It's common for the carbs to do that after a cleaning. The bread tie sync only gets you close enough to run. Now all you need is a real sync with carb sticks. What's happening is one or more of the carb butterflies is open a bit more than it should be and it's pulling the idle up.

Don't chase your tail trying to sync without guages, you'll ge even more frustrated. Either find someone close that has 'em or get yourself a set. You'll be using them at least once a season anyway.

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Could be boots, could be seals.
I saw one of your pictures that showed a large washer under the main jet. I don't think that will work out. Get that out of there and get the correct size. Make certain all the drillings are out from your repair. It does not take much to hose these carbs up. Clean them and clean them some more. When you are done, do it again.

Also, it sounds like the the PO was a real hammerhead. I wonder if he had soaked them in evil rubber eating cleaner. You may consider looking for another rack-o-carbs if all else fails.

It took me several attempts to get my carbs right. After you start it, more crap shakes loose and fouls things up. At some point it will raise up and run for you.

Don't give up. There are some fun roads down by you, not too far from Fort Worth.

        I agree..

Randy is right, you need to synch the carbs. The bench synch with bread ties is not even close. Spend the $50 for a merc synch tool from Motion-Pro as they are the best kind IMHO.

OK the most accurate bench sync is done by eye, a bread tie or similar is waaay too thick - it'll leave the butterfly opened too wide. Also, when the bread tie's removed, the butterfly is likely to shift again anyway.

Pic with the arrow shows where you want the butterfly positioned, 1/2 to 2/3rds covering that front fuel hole. Run a vac/merc gauge later, you'll find the sync is very close to perfect, and your idle will be ticking over at just the right revs.

PGGG... Good point and that's how I bench synch mine... but that's got to be the thickest &%$# bread tie I have ever seen!

Never mind the bread tie, that's got to be the nastiest pair of screws I've ever seen holding a butterfly to the throttle shaft. Sure hope those are 'for illustration only'....

It's a very thin sewing needle sitting in there, 0.5mm at the skinny end, pretty much the same as a bread tie, yes that carb is generally very nasty and illustration only!
