  • Running rough when cold

My bike was running like a dream . Just been synched and color-tuned . Previous to this I had ran a can of Seafoam though it over three tanks . It was like a new bike .
Now - its hard to start ,even when warm . I need all kinds of choke to keep it running . I have had to turn up my idle . When cold it is missing I think sometimes . My exhaust is not completely tight at the mufflers and they may be bored out a bit as well .
    Any ideas ?

Could be that you've disturbed some sediment and rust from the tank, and it has found its way to the bottom of the float bolws and plugged up the wee orifices that feed the enrichener circuit. That, or that same sediment has now plugged up the low-speed circuits in one or more carbs. Either way, I'd say you need to go back into the carbs again.

      carbs - YICS

It runs fine with the choke on - right from start up . Its when I try to ease the choke off , it runs rough when cold .
Could you please describe the process . Thanks . Axel

Ax, I'm sounding like a broken record, but unscrew the idle mix screws another full turn(your colortune might not agree though..)

Let it warm up for a minute or two, and then, with some water in a spray bottle, spray the header pipes to see if all cylinders are burning the same. You may have one or two that won't sizzle like the others.
I agree that it sounds like a carb problem. The cold header pipes will tell you which ones.

            Switcheroo

Tonight I went out and the bike ran great. Not a miss . It has had a chance to dry out after getting some rain . I also failed to mention a seafoam treatment a couple of weeks ago . Nice ride tonight though - riders on the storm .

I trust you used a YICS tool to isolate the intake manifolds when you did the sync?

                  rough running when cold

I've tried a few different things to try to narrow down the cause.
Next is a severe Seafoam treatment to help along any rust or gunk through the carbs . I have made contact with a guy with a shop who will give me space (and advice ) in his shop . He used to be a Yamaha mechanic .He says to Kreem the tank . He figures the carbs need to come off too . I will get a chance to work on my brakes as well . Cheers , Axel

                    fouled plugs

I guesss my plugs were fouled . I installed a new set of Iridium plugs and it runs like a rocketship once more

                      Ah,

But WHY did the plugs foul in the first place?? When the bike is running right, tuned properly, strong ignition, it shouldn't foul them! Folks get thousands if not 10's of k's out of plugs. SeaFoam and inline filters are a good plan! Wonder if because of the cooler climate that you might need a hotter plug? Good Luck!

                        fun and games

I had 3000 kms on the old plugs . I wonder if my mis-use of the choke contributed to the problem . I even forgot to return it on a few rides . I also wonder about my riding practices . I was more used to chucking along at 2500-3000 rpm than cruising at higher rpms . I now pay more attention to this and use lower gears for a faster engine speed . My Seafoam treatments may have me running a little rich as my last synch and color-tune were performed previous . Last I had a few mis - attempts at adjusting the cam chan tensioner but finally got this worked out .
TThe iridium plugs seem to work really nice -more bottom ,easy starts , more responce -so I'm happy for the moment
