  • Vacuum petcocks

I have been turning off my petcocks after every ride . It has occurred to me that maybe this is not necessary . Maybe thats what the vacuum is for and I'm causing extra wear . Any thoughts ?

    Depends ...

... what's the bike? .... if it's a Special that's been re-plumbed to eliminate the Octy, I think you'll want to shut 'em off. If otherwise stock ... ya' won't.

Turn to "Off" when parked for any length of time.
As long as petcocks working will keep fuel in tank...in tank should a float valve decide to leak.

The XJ uses the same petcocks as a Special, and it also uses the octopus. If the octopus has been removed, then I would suggest manually turning the petcocks on and off.
