• $250 for a 81 special moter??

Hi All,

Ran into a problem last night, My FRIEND came over My

house while I was gone.

Started my scoot, & I guess He wanted to see how

high it would regv, so He said he got to 8gs for about 10 secs,

& it jumped into gear, & took off and tore up a stancion on My

patio that held the roof, anyway it stopped. Lucky Me huh< lol

Anyway, checked it out 2day, & it is stuck in gear, nuetral

light comes on, but when I crank it, the back wheel spins & it

wont go into neutral.

Oh yeah it was My rebuilt 78e that I have been gettin

together. Anyway, found a 81 sh carb which I rebuilt & put on

& did not really like the response.

Soooooooooooooooooo, the guy that I got the carb off of,

will sell Me the engine fer $250.

My question is, should I buy it, it has 35 k miles.

Wheras, My 78 has 28 k, &, was runnin pretty decent,

after My rebuild for it.

Another Question, is everything else a direct hookup

for the 81, like shaft, etc..

let Me know what ya think, He wants to sell it to me 2night( an hour or so) !!!

Thx in advance, tc, & keep da back rubber down !!!!

I think that's a little high for a motor. You can buy a whole parts bike cheaper than that. Since yours is running decent still, I'd hold off if I were you... but that's just me. I would just go into the clutches and see what's up. You may just have a cable pinched or something... clutch fibers glazed from an 8k takeoff and sticking.. who knows. 8k rpm on a good motor shouldn't tear one of these up... but the sudden stopping at the end could cause problems. Figure it out and let your "Buddy" pay for his mistake. Hide the keys next time.

& it jumped into gear

Last I checked......
An XS won’t jump into gear by it's self without some help.
Like standing on the shifter.

81 carbs will work on a 78.
What happened to the 78's original carbs???

A good working 81 motor with that low mileage IS a decent buy @ $250!...................and there is no shipping. Sure, you can buy a whole XS for that....................then drop another 2grand in it before you have something.

Geez, Andy, sounds like your "friend" only thinks with the wrong HEAD! His name wouldn't be DICK would it!?

Yeah, you could have a fractured clutch basket, but could also be a bent/broken shift fork, mangled dogs on 1st gear, who knows??

Well, I'd at least let him buy you a year's worth of gas, one tank at a time! Good Luck!

Protect yourself.

Hi Andy,
$350 is mebbe a touch high? Haggle by all means, wave a pair of C-notes under the seller's nose but buy the engine because you need it.
The second thing you need is to pack up and move to a new place.
The third thing you need is to not give that "friend" your new address.

I need new glasses

$250 not $350 for that engine, right?
That's a better deal but by all means still haggle.

Actually, it will, and Maya has done it to my brother. Same scenario, not revving like mad to 8k though. She was on side stand and decided to chuck into gear.
