  • Oil Warning somtimes

My warning lights comes on sometimes when I'm riding and sometimes standing still . If I shut the ignition off and back on its usually ok . I wonder if the oil sender is funny or the wire to it ?

    OIL

Its not an oil pressure light its an oil level unit . Actually it is a piece of styrofoam that tends to stick on the slide. If your oil level is correct just ignore it.

My XJ used to do that a lot too... like every minute or so it would make that *(%^%^ red light flash in my face. I finally just unplugged that little wire going to it. I get a fail when first starting, but hit the reset that one time and don't worry about it any more. Just make sure you visually check your oil level after that if you do it.

Have not had an XJ yet...
Would think the oil level switch is a common style "normally open" switch. I like OEM things so if you don't have to split the cases or take the engine out would fix or replace it. Might check to see if the wire is shorting some where.

I bet it you were realy obsesive compulsive you would figure a way to take the oil pan off and clean the sending unit. Dont ask me, I like my oil pressure switch vs oil level.

              I wanna dipstick

My XS11 has a low pressure light and I'm fine with that. It's the little window to check the oil level through that annoys me.
Window instead of dipstick? Theoretically OK. Window + old fat guy that finds it hard to crouch down + a sidecar in the way?
Effin' stupid. Gotta carry an old handlebar mirror on a stick to see if the level is OK.

                blinking light

I dont seem to have a reset . The thing about crouching over to see the window really sux especially with no center stand . I have never got a dependable reading except maybe when I drove up on a 2x4 under the rear wheel and had my Dad hold a level across the bars .
But thats all different now cuz I got a center stand from a wrecker today . He had me take off the wrong one first so I looked around and found a 80 xs11 . The stand was perfect . I installed it there but had some problems with the pedal hitting the muffler . After a struggle getting the spring on , I rode home .
Guess what - I got to the gas station and flipped it up on the center stand and checked my oil !
It was down at the lower mark - so maybe the indicator is doing its job .
But windows insead of dipstiks ???

                        double vision

wrong again . My speedo goes to 240km/h so 120km/h (70mph) is half way on the dial .
                        240km/h = (holy ****)mph

p.s. I put some oil in and the light went away

                          Damn Flashing Red Light

The light came back but I learned how to turn it off. Once to change from flashing to constant and once more to turn the light off . The diagnostic still reads the OIL warning though .
After I ride for a while it goes away .

Have the same intermittent problem with my oil light. The sensor in the pan is the problem. You do not have to pull the pan to replace it; 2 bolts on the bottom of the pan hold the sensor in place. Last I checked the sensor was still available from Yamaha; I plan to replace mine when I pull the pan to work on my first gear issue.

Light comes on in cold weather even with proper amount of oil until the oil warms up a bit, takes 3 - 4 miles. Also tends to come on after hard braking.

After I pull mine I am going to dissect the old one, take some photos, and learn why it begins to act up.
