  • Mystery Oil Consumption

Ok, Hi guys. This is going to be multiple issues.........But one at a time!!
I went on 200 mi. ride a couple weeks ago. Yea, twistin' on & off. Not too EXsisive though. Pit stop @ 30 mi. from home. Hum, think I'll put 'er on center stand and do quick check over.....sight glass...... Was at full mark when left the house, now at the lowest mark, still visible. Took it easy to the house........
Ok, back at the ranch.........I have no visible leaks, does not smoke,(still battling rich cond. however). No oil residue in air box,(stock box w/ k&n) pull plugs, comp. test.......
    #1-----plug, tan.....165#
    #2-----plug, black/fluffy.....150#
    #3-----plug, tan......157#
    #4-----plug, black/fluffy......160#
Have lost 10# on no. 2 since last comp. test. (1,000 mi.) Thinking this could be tight valve? Thinking valve seals need replaced @ oil consumption......Questions are.....
1------Has anyone attempted/succeeded to replace valve seals without pulling the head? Have done this on small block chevy.......1) quick coupler to screw in spark plug hole...what pressure to set air compressor reg. at? spring comp. tool? Not afraid of fab work!
2------Would rich cond. contribute to oil consumption?

Will be back into the carbs first, little as possible down time!! It's ridn' season ya know! Just thinkin' down the road....opinions welcome.........

BTW......running Castrol 20/50 oil (not wanting to start oil thread! lol) No fuel in crankcase either.......

Add oil and keep an eye on it for a while. I had one suddenly go through a quart between fill-ups once. It is normal now. I don't know what happened! The bike was checked on a level surface...

Yep, Bike was level. That's prob. going to be plan as of now. Side note: I did wash/clean K&N & reoil, rejet mains to orig. #110s accross the bank (this can be done with-out removing carbs, allen head bolts ) 150 mi. ride resulted in less consumption. Throttle action was slightly tamed down a-bit, SWMBO on the back.
Still on the rich side however, did pull stronger though. Will address carbs first........just wondering if anyone has tried stem seal replacement w/o head removal?
Thanks skids, Guess when they get thirsty.......just give 'em a-little drink!
      btw: avg. mpg..........33-35..........stk. f/d
