TopCat,Regarding my XS1100SG-The bike doesnt start when it is cold,i have to pull out the choke to start it.How high is it supposed to rev until you can push the choke in halfway?hooking up the vacuum lines described by MRO in a previous thread makes the bike idle more smooth but was wondering about what you said earlier.

    Hey there,

I was hoping some other Xsives would have chimmed in on their starting procedures, haven't checked your other thread since last night!?

Depending on the ambient temperature, it can take a minute or two for it to warm up enough to where the idle rpm will start to rise to push in 1/2 way, from there on, possibly another minute or two!

BUT...most folks don't stand around waiting for it to warm up completely before taking off! We usually start it up, and once the oil light goes out, we take off, with enrichener still engaged, and ride a 1/2 mile or so, then push it in to 1/2 way, ride another 1/2 mile or so, and then push it all the way in, and it usually is responding well by that time! YMMV!

I do somewhat the same procedure but my question is What is the normal RPM range that when the choke is pulled out,in other words what should the tach be reading at full choke before you say hey i need to push this thing in.

I start mine on full choke then move the bike from the backyard to the front of the house. Idle will be around 2k by then. When out the front I push the choke halfway in and go and get my helmet/gloves etc. By the time I've put my gear on and closed the garage door the bike is back up to 1500 revs and slowly climbing.

Climb on and choke right off for the ride to work.

This based on this mornings temp of 6 degrees celsius.

        Hope this helps

Yam, from cold, I always found my 78' would start to rev to 2000 or so revs after only, say, 15 - 20 seconds on full choke. If the idle mix screws are set pretty lean, it'll take longer to settle to a smooth idle when the choke is completely off. If the idle mix screws are set richer(another turn) the motor'll be more 'warm-blooded' from cold. If the motor doesn't fire instantly from one touch of the starter button on shut throttle/full choke - on a cold start - the starter circuit(s) are probably gummed up inside..

pggg- bike starts up instantly. But i noticed that the piece of metal that holds the carbs all together, small amount of gas developes on this piece. Not alot but enough to annoy me.I have not been able to ride bike in 3 1/2 weeks-seat is being repaired and guy is taking his sweet time

In temps 65 and up, I give it half choke, let it smooth out then take the choke off entirely.

When it's colder, it only needs full choke for around 20 to 30 seconds, but takes about a full minute on half choke to be rideable.

Sounds like you have a fuel leak....DUH.....but from where?
IF you still have the Octy, check there, and ALL of the lines running to and from it!

Also, there are rubber seals around the enrichener plungers, can go bad, leak!

You'll want to find and fix it, no fun when bike catches on fire!

TC is right...that is what happend to my little Half-Breed. The PO had a gas leak ignite and burn the bike. All the wiring above the engine was fried. To fix I think he had a family of rats rewire it.
I took it to a shop and spent as much as I paid for the bike getting it rewired and I still have only the basics.
Uggg fire bad....very bad...make wires hot and melty!
