    Timeing plate on special?

The aluminium plate holding the bearing on the vac advance plate. Should I use the one with or without the ajusting holes, (I have both),I do have the TCI box that does not need the cent.advance unit,it runs a bit rough at very low revs, and it swings awhile before she starts unless shes warn, but that might be cracked inlet rubbers,I'm running pod filters. Is it possible for sombody to give me an order of what to look at with those symtoms(spelling sorry). How critical is the 0.7 gap at the pickups?I,m getting a feeler gauge today.
    Thanks
    Anthony

Pic of 81 special timing plate from http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/parts/home.aspx

    cracked inlet rubbers
Fill cracks with RTV, then wrap black electrical tape on em.
Start tape from under where hose clamp goes then towards head and back agin. Clamp will keep tape there for a looong time.
I've been meaning to try and find some shrink tubing to put on some of my old boots, just haven't got around to it yet.

Pod filters will make it run on the "lean" side altho at idle may be able to turn out pilot screws some to help with starting and low RPM with out changing the jet. My experience is limited on pod filters except on my hot rod...but it has a set of flat slide carbs so is no help here.

      Note

I've taken off the gaskets between carb boot and head and used some non-hardening gasket sealer there. Fixed a vac leak I had there.
