Shock mount issue... AAAHHH!!

Ok. I'll start off by saying that all of my woes are completely my own fault.

I lowered my bike 2" via Harley full covered 11" shocks. The issue was that the socks used a smaller diameter post than what the stock ones did. So i got out the grinder and went to work. Got the shocks on the posts, went to tighten the right side down and the bolt broke off. (I guess 24 hours wasn't enought time to let it cool). Anyway it's broke and I have a leaf spring u-bolt holding it all together.

Long story short I need a frame with the final drive and swingarm on it. (Or some nice soul to weld another tab on for me) Im poor so if anyone has anything lying around they don't need... I can give you a little for it, but not big$$. Surface rust is okay with me. I'd repaint it anyway.

Sorry about that, I know the feeling (the "its my own fault" part of it) never broken a shock stud YET! I do run a portable welding rig but I am up here in WI and the travel time would kill ya. I do think that just having someone weld it up for you would be the fastest and cheapest route to fix the problem though. There must be a welding shop around you somewhere that could take care of it for a lot less time, money and trouble than changing the frame.

Your cheapest route would be to get a bolt right diameter/lenth, cut off head and weld it on. I'd use a grade 8 bolt too.

Just cost of freight or gas to get another frame could be more than repairing yours.

Then agin, your problem could be caused by trying to put a hardley part on a jap bike

He He He... I know HD don't mesh. If yamaha made a shock that would work I would have used it.

I did buy a grade 8 bolt and am looking for someone that has the time to weld it for me... no luck yet.

I hope skids doesn't mind, but you might want to send him a PM. He's just north of you, and he may be able to help.
As far as shocks, look for a pair of used Progressive shocks, as they can fit almost any bike. I was able to get a pair from a local shop cheap, because they had been sitting for about three years. I put LONGER shocks on my machine, as I wanted the ground clearance.
Good luck with the HD stuff, and I hope the bike doesn't try to shake the back end off, trying to get rid of the "junk" parts!

Once you get that fixed watch the torque on those puppies. It looks like a BIG bolt but specs are somewhere around 23 foot pounds. I remember that the one that goes to the final drive is also different then the other 3. Check your manual and be sure to use the right acorn nuts with the thick washers under them. If nuts are not deep enough, or the thick washers are omitted the post will bottom out in the nut and cause the post to be twisted off even at low torque levels.

A niced easy way to fix, that has been done before on various bike,

-Grind the stud off flat with the frame.
-centre punch the centre of the circle where the stud was.
-get a bolt grade 8 (high tensile) same size as the stud but longer so you need to add the width of the frame to it..
-Drill thru the frame where the stud was....Right thru...
-push the bolt thru from the other side.

-Now you can bolt your shock onto the bike and ride it somewhere to get them to tack weld the bolt head to the inside of the frame.....

Has been tried and proven....good thing is you DONT have to tack weld it until you have the cash to get someone to do it or find someone to help...I did one that i plain forgot to weld still using it like that 3years later....If you can would be a good idea to use a bolt that has a long shank before the thread starts or use a sleave to tighten the nut against but not to neccesary so long as you use a nylon lock nut to hold the shock on..
