Dirty YICS

I've got an XJ1100 and I pulled the YICS plug off yesterday to test my newly made YICS tool. But first, I shoved a piece of fuel hose in a few inches to see how tight a fit it was. To my surprise, it was pretty grimey when i pulled it out. Is this normal for a 25 year old bike? Or could it be an indication of more serious issues, like a leaking intake valve.

I've seen the same thing on SWMBO's 'H which has an XJ top end on an XS block. I don't think this is anything to worry about.
