  • new to me '80...what maint to do?

ok, so I have had my bike for about a week. It is an '80 special with 47k miles...so far, what I have learned...

1...hazards dont work, and it does not have auto canceling turn signals....or that does not work either....frankly, I can deal with this.

2...first carb has some leakage. not alot, and only that one carb. I do the "petcock off" fix for that so far...I know I need to remove carbs and clean them...and may also have octopus problems. I dotn mind pulling and cleaning carbs. did it on a Virago 750 and it was a pain. What I dont want to get stuck doing is trying to synch and adjust carbs, because I dont know how....YET.

3...runs like crap when it gets wet...diagnosed that to a bad boot/spark plug wire connection. Plan to replace coils and wires this winter if money does not allow me to do it sooner.

4...Gas tank looks kind of yucky inside, but more like it has varnish, not really rust spots. I would like to replace it...can new (to me) tanks be found or do I need to do the sealant thing?

All in all the bike runs pretty good for something with 47k miles and 27 years old. I think that I will change oil to rotella with some lucas in it. prob need to check the air filter. it has pretty new plugs, but I might go to Bosch Platinums...it helped in the Virago.

What else should I do? Should I do the carbs ASAP? or do you think that it is OK to wait till winter? How hard is the adjustment and synch if you dont have special synch gauges etc?

    Got a manual?

    1...hazards...
    has seprate flasher from turns

    2...first carb has some leakage...
Cleaning may fix that, carb sync can be done on the cheep by trading your time for the fancy set of carb sticks. I use a single vacuum gauge. Requires extra time to sync em as you have to repeatedly move it from carb to carb and then back agin but end results are good.

3...runs like crap when it gets wet
cutting off 1/4 to 1/2 inch on plug wire and reinstall may fix that.
    Inspect plug cap for corrosion.

4...Gas tank looks kind of yucky inside
No rust in a XS fuel tank? That would be cool, all mine have some to one degree or another. Have read a tech bulliten where Yamaha has a carb cleaner that is mixed with "water" and used to clean fuel tank. May still be available. If not laqer thinner might be cheeper than carb cleaner.

Would clean all the electrical connectors and grounds, mid/finnal drive fluid change. Clean/flush brake lines and MC's (if brake fluid looks like new and brakes work properly might wait to change)
