Yep topcat you were correct it had 45 pilot jets,so I put the 42.5s in from the K&L kits and fitted a petcock kit in the leaking tap.It now has the factory set up of 110 mains on 1&4 and 120s on
2&3 and correct pilots and the pilot mixture screws set at 1 1/2 turns out from lightly seated.the carbs are benched synced the leaking float valve has stopped leaking.
On start up it now needs full choke and misses and backfires like 2 plugs leads are crossed over.It will not take any throttle either with the choke in or out without missing even worse.
However once it is up to operating temp it idles ok with a variation of 100rpm or so and from then on runs perfectly .It will now pull cleanly from 1800rpm to redline in top gear and generally is glitch free with instant throttle response from anywhere in the rev range.
I pulled the plugs after idling the bike for 3 minutes the plugs show its running very lean.plugs are a chalky white colour.I will play around with the mixture a little and see how that goes.
Thanks for your help topcat and others,I feel like progress is being made.

        Very NICE

Every time I see a MSN looking that good makes me want to hurry up and get mine done so I can ride it. Then reality sets in. If I rush it would have to cut corners and use "cheep" paint so it might look real cool but only for a short time....

btw, on start up...would check header to see if all four are firing.
I use the "OH $h1t that's hot" hand method" to find any non cooperating cylinders.
btw2, if it's pulling strong now before vac sync, you'll really like it after.

Have you got a picture of your bike MRO ?I
I started the bike today on full choke and no backfire,it must be self tuning.Took it for another run and only the idle is a little uneven. The carb balance should fix that.Even against my 06 speedtriple which weighs less than 400lbs this old girl has an awsome mid-range.What a hoot.

            MNS

Currently, have it down to a rolling frame.

So right now I'm limited to riding my 80G, or 79SF, or the hot rod XS, or the other special....because all my other XS's all have "issues"

I have a set of those straight spoke wheels coming from california,I don't like the curved spoked ones on mine. How many total have you got,and do they all change a bit clunky or is my clutch playing up.I finally dropped the oil yesterday,it was like black tar.May be it will change better now.?

4 runners, 4 1/2 non runners which the 80LG is slooowly getting there and might think about
getting the 81SH running after the LG is going.
(the SH has curved spokes, think there kinda cool looking)
