  • Techical Service manual

After lurking about the forum for a while it seems that there is a bit of difference of opinion concerning what service manuals are out there. At least I am not clear. I need one for a XJ11. I want one that has both the electrical schematics and all of the pertinent information about making repairs. I have the bike in a state of "help needed" as I have taken several parts off and am wanting to replace them properly. I have put a fairing on and need to know which wires are necessary for the headlight, etc.

Some of you guys have more info in your little fingers than is in my whole mind. Can you point me in the right direction? By the way I really want a service manual and not a disk.

    xj owners manual

The service manual is still available from the dealers, but the price was around 40.00. There is also another manual by either clymer or haynes that covers all the 1100's for about 17.00. The factory one is only for the xj1100 maxim, but I have both and for most repairs and maintenance the other one is fine.......mike in san diego 82 xj1100

      Thanks for the reply.

I'll check the one out at the dealers. I need the specifics.

You have a couple options. First is a dealer, who can order the XJ service manual for you. Depending on dealer, cost is $35.00 - $40.00 range. Dealer could also get you a microfiche card, which has all the exploded views and part number of every part that makes up the bike. Dealers get these at no charge, but usually charge $5.00 for them.

You need a reader, some libraries still have one or two for public use (some with printers to print out the section you are viewing) or you can buy one at most used office eqipment stores. Prices range from $5.00 and up.

Other optiuon is to contact Rob Mills, who did a super job of getting XS11 and XJ11 manual and microfiche on a CD. See the link at:

        http://www.xs11.com/tips/cdrom.htm

I have both the CD and factory manual for the XJ. (There are no aftermarket manuals that cover it specifically.) The CD is particularly nice as you can print out individual pages for a given job and not fill the factory manual with greasy fingerprints.

There are a few online resources with manuals for specific year/models, but getting the factory manual and/or Rob's CD covers you as well as can be done.

          Thanks Jerry.

I have just placed an order with Rob Mills. The link still works.
I really will have to order the manual as I am old enough to be book oriented and remember the 1957 Belair when it came out new.

          rolling on!

            Re: Techical Service manual

Dave, it really is not too bad of a thing to work out if you have some patience and a multimeter. Set it to volts and test the wires to the bike by flipping switches back and forth with the bike running.

That is where I have a challenge. The wires are not connected and I have to figure them out to start the bike. I got the bike for free and have been doing the usual cleaning and rebuilding to get it in rideable shape before I can start it. Brakes, tires, oil changes, rebuilding carburation system, throttle cable, battery, etc. What was free has cost me a cool grand to this point in time, including a paint job on the tank, fairing, side covers, etc. So the short story for a long post is I need to figure the wires out before I try to start it.

I like having both, as I can browse the printed manual at my leisure, then print out the same pages to have with me along side the bike when I am doing the work. Manual does not have the same exploded views, or part numbers, that the microfiche has, so 'fiche is nice to have. My reader cost me $5.00 at an office surplus sale. Again, with the CD, you can print out the relevant pages as needed.

With part numbers from the 'fiche you can sometimes tell what parts are unique to your bike and what parts were also used on other bikes. Yamaha's system is that the first digits/letters (10M for the XJ) mean the part was first used on that model. If you see no letter/number, just numbers, it means that part was used in many models. Bolts, gaskets, mostly misc hardware fit in this category. If the part number starts with an earlier XS designation, it means the same part was used on an earlier XS and was not changed for use on the XJ. Thus you can get parts from eBay, salvage yards, and dealers that are marked XS and know they will fit the XJ.

Not always fool proof, example XJ front brake rotors carry 10M part numbers, but the XS rotors will fit the XJ, they just are not slotted as are the stock XJ rotors.

At least one dealer, Zanotti Motors, will give you a discount on parts if you can supply part numbers. It is a savings of time for them. Plus, many dealers have counter people younger than our bikes, and it behooves you to go in armed with as much information as possible.

Dave, untill you get Rob's CD, check out the offsite tech tips, http://www.xs11.com/tips/offsite.shtml
in particular the Dutch Yamaha XS1100 page at http://www.xs1100.vinden.nl/
There is a good colour wiring diagram there that might help get you started.

                    Jerry,

That is some good info on the peculiarities of the XJ. I had seen the 10M but didn't recognize it as being unique to the XJ.

I have just ordered both. The CD should come in a few days and the manual, who knows.

I am really tempted to try your carburation changes before I start the bike just to have it in an understandable order prior to starting. The octopus is so strange and doesn't seem to make any sense. But then without a book not a whole lot makes the kind of sense that I like to have.

                      Brian,

I checked out the two sites you recommended and saw a bunch of XS 1100 info but I am ignorant enough not to know which applies to the XJ and which doesn't. So I hope that my CD and manual get here in a hurry.

                      Thanks for your input.
