special fork on standard

does anyone think a80 standard would be
better with a special front fork ? also does
anyone know if the stanchion tubes are the same ,then you could just change lower legs.

Would think that if it was better the people who designed the standard would have used the other forks.

The Special has a leading axle, where the Standard does not. Everything else the same, this would change the geometry of your Standard (negatively in my opinion).

I believe the '81 Standard came with the same forks at the Special. To make this work, the triple clamp from a Special need to be used to keep the geometry stock.

I have Special tubes (3" longer) with Standard shock on them, in Standard triple clamps. I did this so I could attach clip-ons to the 3" extension out of the top of the triple clamps, but not alter the steering geometry.

I put a standard front end on a special and it rides fine.

The key to this is to swap the whole front end not just the fork legs. The triple clamps are different on the special to make up for the longer leading axle legs. As a unit the 2 front ends come out about the same but the 16" rear wheel on the special exaggerates the rake a bit.

Personally I find the front brakes on the specials to be weird and I'm happy to not have them on my bike.
