The best way to adjust them is to bend the tang up or down which ever way you need to go
Have you check out the Tech Tips on the main Forum Page
scrool down and you will find a ton of information and if thats not
enuff for you go the top of your page and in the search section type in floats or carbs or whatever your interested in and you will recieve tons of info
My 80 special floats according to the manual are 23mm
lots of guys vary there floats tho to richen or lean there bikes
so its kinda Users choice what ever works best for you

The float height depends on the year of the bike, and the intake and exhaust system on the bike. I run my '79 at about 27mm, but 1mm off will make a BIG difference.

Later carbs, 80/81 float height 23mm +, - .05mm
carbs upside down measured from bowl gasket surface to highest point both sides of float.
(yammaha manual)
XJ carbs I've not got the chance to mess with so....
