The screw covering the pilot jet is OEM for 78-79 carbs. Good chance your carbs are correct. I think some rebuild kits come with the rubber plugs, intended to replace the screws. There is no need to replace those screws. Have you tried a small screw extractor to remove the pilot jet? Insert the extractor with a couple of sharp blows with a hammer, and turn it counter clockwise.

      Broken jet removal

      Hi mrutah,
another thing to try is a just smaller than the jet's thread size left-handed drill-bit. Most amateur bench drills won't run backwards so you are most likely stuck with using a hand-held electric drill that can be set to run backwards. Be real gentle. With luck the drill-bit will bind in the jet's soft brass and thread it out for you.

Have you ever cleaned the fuel tank?
Are you using in-line fuel filters?

I like the reverse drill idea to remove pilot screw, but would first try using an awl. (like a very heavy needle with a handle)
I've been lucky getting a few out with one. Stick the point of awl on the out side edge of screw, slight angle clock wise and try to spin out screw. Little wizard oil don't hurt.
          _____

If you have a drill press and are trying to get it out with the reverse twist bit, can lower bit to center of screw and then turn chuck by hand while applying light pressure on press, as screw starts to turn lighten up slowly on pressure. You may need someone to help hold carb in place.

thanks for the info well see if we carry a reverse drill bit or an easy out at my job tomarrow when i go to work as far as the gas tank it looks brand new inside and yes im using inline filters would not do it anyother way glad to know there the right carbs have to order the spings that go over the needle and the little washers as well po took them out will also do bench sync then i will take it for a run i think they are out of sync put my needles back to there stock position and it ran like crap so im going change out my mains and pilot jets whikle i have it apart going to dip it to really give a good cleaning also going to move needle setting again put it back on 4th setting like it was before maybe drill the air box out once i find the link here to learn how to do that one question though should i increase the plug gap because i am using some new coils from mikes xs or leave them sock

              NOOOOOO.....DON'T DIP THEM!!!!

              Hey Utah,

Hopefully you'll see this message BEFORE you soak your carbs. The bucket carb cleaner is too harsh for the rubber seals around the butterfly shafts, and you can ruin them by soaking them. This will cause massive vacuum leaks, and really make it run poorly!

All that is needed for the carb bodies is usually just some good spray carb cleaner. Soaking is for the removable metal parts, jets, nozzles, etc!

Interesting question, I left mine the same gap, but yeah, you're possibly right, a stronger coil may be able to provide a stronger spark over a larger gap making a larger spark flame front??

Okay technical gurus, what's the right answer??

My dynacoils have the plugs with 1mm gaps, about 25% larger spark, but makes not a shred of difference to the bikes' performance

Before doing any mods.....(like putting holes in air box)
would just get it running right.
Mods done before bike running right can make trouble shooting kompliziert
