Carb Holder and Carb Question

I was on the phone talking to Hippie Dave and he is trying to make some cheaper HP ( I know... that's a problem in itself) He is thinking of trying out some pod filters from APE racing. I told him to be sure he tells them 52mm instead of 54. That got me to thinking, and I haven't seen it on here. Can someone with an XS get the carbs and holders from an XJ (54mm) and get more air flow to their motor? I see the inherant problems with the enrichener and such, but could he get more performance by messing with the jetting off of these carbs?

It may be cheaper to find a good used set of FJ carbs, but I was just wondering.

From what little I've read and XSperienced on the XS, short of some serious engine mods, newer style carbs are the only mod that will make a noticeable power boost.

It would just seem to me that if you could get more air, you could theoretically make more power with the proper jetting.

BUT... does anyone know what the true inside dimensions are when it gets down to the jets and slides? If they are both the same at that point, just belled out a bit more at the opening, the extra couple millimeters wouldn't make much of a difference.

Not scientific, just seat ole de pants

I've ridden a friends XS, pod filters, re-jetted, no baffles in exhaust
Bike ran well, no stumbles or hesitations, did not run it over 7,500 RPM tho. Other than being XSively louder than my stock 80G, felt a little slower.
