Petcock position

How do you know what position the petcock is in? Should the handle be toward the desired position, or opposite? I'm not sure if I'm running around with mine in the ON position, or RES position. Might be a dumb question, but I'm new to this bike.

lever down is "Run" on both models

The handle should point to the desired function. I don't know what type of bike you have, but on a Special on is handle down, reserve is up, off is forward, and prime is to the rear.

Thanks. Turns out I've been running in RES position. That may have turned into a long walk somewhere.
