  • Transmission gears, which ones?

Ok silly question but, which gears am I supposed to change to fix the transmission issue? Is it the wheel or the pinion? I know I need 1st and 4th and 2nd and 5th but, when I went to buy the parts I saw on the order sheet two sets one being labeled wheel and the other pinion. I felt like a deer in the head lights.......

    Thanks,

A Dremmel tool is a WHOLE lot less. The pinion has three pins that fit into slots in the hub of your "Wheel" or gear. Both of the contact areas get rounded and start pushing the pins and gears apart under pressure. Look in the tech tips for a better explanation, but you use a Dremmel tool and bevel these contact points slightly to where it actually pulls them together more the harder you accelerate.

So.. if buying new parts... I'd say both. No small sum.

      Thanks for the quick repy.
So to fix second gear would require the 2nd gear wheel, the 2nd gear pinion, the 5th gear wheel and the 5th gear pinion? Yikes

Ok, I looked at the schematics again and I think I got it now. The "gear pinions" work theeth to theeth on their relavent "Gear wheels". And the problem lies in the Drive/counter Shaft and not the Main Shaft where the pinions are. So Second gear works as follows... From the engine to the main shaft to 2nd/3rd "pinion" to 2nd "gear wheel" to the 5th "gear wheel" dogs to the drive/counter shaft then to the rear. If this is correct then all I need are the 4 "gear wheels" and not the "gear pinions"?

If you are replacing gears, take a good long look at the shift forks. You can eat up a new set of gear if the shift forks are in bad shape.

Good point DZ. I will be checking the two other forks but, I will replace fork 1 for sure.
