  • Carb Body Switch Out ??

I have a set of 1979 special carbs coming and know that the bowls and tops are different. Question is will the carb bodies be the same as what's on my 79 standard model? i would like to switch out #1 body on my bank and use my own bowl and top.

    Hey Rob,

The 78-79 carbs are the same, so it should be a simple plug and play swap out. The problems are when you get the 80-81 series carbs trying to swap with the 78-79 series!

What about between the special and the standard models of the same year? I know the tops and bowls look different but i am guessing that this is the only difference. I have a broken float post on my current #1 carb and want to switch out that carb body. I will repair the broken post later for use on my other bike. If the condition of the carb bank that is coming is good I may just use the whole bank after a good proper cleaning.

        I think

I believe that was what TC said in his post. The 78 and 79 were the same between the two models. If you look at the schematics of both model the F and SF for the carburetors you will see they are the same. You can go to either Yamaha or Bikebandit to see the schematics.

78-79 standard and special LOOKS the same. Some specials had chrome tops. If they look diff than your 79 they are 80-81.

The only obvious difference I see when I look at them is that on the special the tops of the carbs all have a small tit in the middle and the bowls drain is set up differently. I would not think that there would be any other differences but who knows and i don't want any more carb issues. It will be nice to just clean them, stock jet them and install them on a stock bike.

If they have a tit on the top, 80-81. If they have a screw horizontally on bottom of bowl 81. Clean em up and use complete set.

                79 Needle Jet P/N

I have a real interest in carbs for the past few months .
                So dug this up .........
The jet needles are the same on all four , BUT , the P/n's change for needle jets ...
                Needle 2h7-14116-06-00(5GZB-3)
                1+4 needle jet 2h7-14941-02-00
                2,3 " " 2h3-14941-02-00
So I guess it would be bad to mix these around ...

I understand the needle jets (enulsion tubes) are different because the 2 & 3 cylinders run slightly hotter since they between the 1 & 4 cylinders. The 1 & 4 holes have more cooling fins.

                    Carbs

I had four sets to use when I restores my 79 SF and spent alot of time on this site and window shopping on Ebay. if the tops and bowls are different then the vents should be different as well unless someone used parts from the early and later versions. MY 81 maxim 550 has the sames style drains as the 80-81 bs34's. In 28 years you can't be sure whats been mixed around but I don't know if yhe bowls will actually interchange between the early and later models. There is an awfull lot of info on this site that shows the main differences.

The bowls will interchange between 78-79 and between 80-81 but NOT interchange 78-79 to 80-81.
