Is it alright to shift through the gears without using the clutch if there is no clunking or noises---I do use the clutch when downshifting but have also done it without the clutch.

    Speed shifting

I have read and heard that it does no damage when speed shifting through the gears, however these bikes are notorious for hard clunky shifting to befin with. They also have problems in wearing out gears so I would suggest use of the clutch.

Cajun is right about the shift being difficult but with lots of practice you can change up and down without clutching.

On a good day I will set off from standstill using the clutch and ride until stopping without clutching, slipping into neutral as I put my foot down.

I find it a much smoother ride with less harshness to the tranny.

Its all a case of getting your revs right.

However if riding using the full rev range and caining it I have to use the clutch, or simply when I'm feeling lazy and can't be bothered being accurate with revs.

If you can be bothered you'll find it rewarding.

Edit: I've owned my XS for 23 years and its done 78,000 miles with no gearbox glitches.

          shifting

          TomB,

Thanks for the reply and Frogdink--it shifts smoothly without the clutch and makes absolutely no noise.

I will continue to do so and hope I get the kind of results you gotTomB.
