I'd like to replace my acorn nuts. They've gotten quite rusty and a bit embarrassing. Anyone know the size and thread depth and the torque they should be installed at? How about a place to buy new ones? Thx

malber,
If by acorns you mean the head nuts, they are 10mm x 1.25 pitch.
Don't recall the depth, but pull one and measure the stud.
No, Mcmaster doesn't have that thread pitch. I got mine at (!) my local Harley dealer.
Torque to 25 ft-lbs and use oil on the threads

But if you're talking about the shock nuts:
I remember seeing those acorn nuts in MikesXS, their online pages don't describe them fully, but see below:

** I have the actual catalog, and it is further described as 10mm x 1.25 pitch!**

Nobody will see them except the ones on the very outside (4). They polish up pretty well with a fine sanding disk on a roto-zip. Finish with some fine wet-sand paper... rub on some simi-chrome and re-install. Good as almost new! lol.

Sorry, should have been more specific. Yes I meant the head nuts. Thanks for the replies. If I can find them cheap I'll replace, but if not I'll clean up the ones I have. My bike is not pretty like everyone else's but she runs well and is a lot of fun. I just feel a bit underdressed parking next to the nice shiny polished sport bikes.1981 XS1100SH

It's kind of like fighting... there's ALWAYS going to be someone tougher than you out there. Every time I think I have my bike looking pretty decent, someone like Hippy Dave comes and parks their bike next to mine! He keeps an eye on me to be sure I don't spit on it! lol.
I like to go up and pick things apart on his bike when he does that. Like last time, I showed him the one little bug spot he had from riding hundreds of miles... and the little wire on your carbs that holds the clutch cable... that thing wasn't chromed or anything! Can you believe that?!?
I try to clean it up a bit, but I ride every day... rain or shine, so it will never look like that. Find something every couple days to polish on. You'll be surprised what can happen along in about a month's time.
Good luck.
Tod
P.S. I have been biting my tongue this entire post trying to keep my mind out of the gutter and make some rude comment about the title of the thread... lol. I have been good though!Try your hardest to be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.

All haiku'd up
Hi Malber,
as posted, those acorn nuts are M10x1.25 and most commecially available replacements are M10x1.5 and won't fit. Try for a Nylok instead?
BTW the top verse of your sign-off:-
"Well weathered leather
Hot metal and oil
The scent of country air"
needs the last two lines transposed and another syllable to fit the haiku format:-
"Well weathered leather
The odor of country air
Hot metal and oil"

By Accident?
Hi Malber,
well, nearly so. 3 lines of blank verse, yes to both.
5, 5, 6 syllable count on the first and 4, 6, 5 on the second, both come close to the haiku's 5, 7, 5.
I guess it was folding "every" into "ev'ry" to lose a syllable that led me to suppose you were aiming for the haiku format.

I found a place with some chrome acorn head nuts that I am going to try out.
link
My question is about the washers under them. These get nasty also and would like to replace the outside ones along with those nuts. These washers are XSeptionally thick though. I thought about just trying to double washer it with a couple stainless washers under these chrome nuts.
Thoughts and/or criticism please?
On a side note, I walked into my closest Hardley dealer like Randy stated he had done above and asked for a 10mm x 1.25 pitch acorn head nut and they looked at me like I was stupid and said they didn't have any of that metric sh!t. ???
