I have the 79 Standard, but I have the floorboards and forward controls, so, even though I have the kick starter in reserve, I would never use it. I ran out of gas twice, and my son had the gas off once and didn't realize it at the time, and in all of those situations, after running the battery down, and pushing it to the gas station, we had to run with it and pop it into second gear for a successful start. That works quite well.
Speaking of the charging system, do you all find that this system just never puts out enough juice for all the accessories? I find that just running for awhile with the half dozen or so running lights, and not my two pairs of auxiliary front lights, my blinkers slow down or stop, and my headlight gets weak. I have a brand new super battery, but I still have to use the Battery Tender to be sure. I also carry the mini jumper cables from Pep Boys, in their little case. When I asked the dealer about an upgrade to the alternator, he said that none was available.
