I recently purchased an Xs1100 with a few pings and dings( and alot of wire everywhere) After a trip to ebay to get a service manual i sat down and started to flip through the pages. I noticed the countless wiring diagrams. I also noticed there are alot of diffenent models. So i went outside and looked at the serial numbers on my bike. By looking at the numbers in the book xs11g should start with 3H5 and xs11sg should start with 3J6. My bike looks just like the xs11sg but the numbers on my bike start with 3H3. How do i tell the difference? How do i tell exactly which model i have? I have worked on cars all my life but i am sort of a dummy when it comes to bikes. Can anyone help me?

3H3 does sound like a '79 SF (special)... did you get the vin from the motor or the steering stem?
Also, be aware that some of your parts may be from different years since you bought this bike used - which would mainly affect the carbs and getting the correct carb parts.1979 XS11F Standard - Maya - 1196cc (out of order)

Ok, it's *definately* a 1979 XS11 SF then. No specials were made for 1978 from the factory and the numbers match up to the XS11.com specification page:

It is possible it got titled as a '78, though it is a 1979 model.1979 XS11F Standard - Maya - 1196cc (out of order)
