  • Final Drive Report

Ok fellas...I promised to update you on the results of my final drive swap.

Last week I took a 3000 mile road trip from OK to east Texas (Jax Rally) then onto west Texas through the mountains of Big Bend and Davis. Then we rode north into New Mexico and the southern Rockies around Ruidoso.

The gearing was perfect and there was no sign of strain on either bike. That's right Bohn Frazier was with me. His bone stock 80 SG performed flawlessly as well.

In the twisties of the mountians if you really wanted to rip....just drop a gear from what you'd normally ride. If not just leave it a lone and let the torque of the venerable Eleven do it's deed.

On the open road this mod is the bomb. As you may know the speed limit on I-10 from Junction west to El Paso (roughly 500 miles) is 80! You can easily cruise 85 to 88 and the HP won't even give you a second look. You gotta be hoofing well in XS of 90 to even get their attention.

Normally at these speeds with the OEM drive Zilla would get about 30-31 mpg. Two tanks proved I was getting 37 mpg!!! Bohn Frazier was getting stellar results as well. Neitherhe nor I had any problems pulling the steep inclines in the Big Bend or Davis Mountains. Both bikes performed very very well. For touring long distances this mod is the ticket. The bikes were revving about 5000 rpm at 88 mph...the sweet spot. And at 80 only 4400-4500 rpm they were really relaxed.

5000 miles on my mod so far anf no problems. 3000 of those would be considered high speed touring. This mod has transformed my Eleven into an asphalt shark. It literally eats up thousands of miles of interstate now with not so much as hard breath. THANKS CHOPS!

If anything changes I'll keep you abreast of the situation. By summers end I should easily have 15,000 miles on this mod.

    Later brethren.

PS: I plan on posting a story regarding the rally and our subsequent venture to the west Texas desert later in the week. Suffice it to say we hit some really nasty weather on several occasions including a hail storm in the mountians of NM. Stay tuned.

I am really happy with mine as well. It is a much better feeling not to be pushing the rpms so hard as stock. I am sure that the wear and tear is going to be reduced as well as oil breakdown. I will leave my other two xs11s as-is for now for that snappier feel "out of the hole."
