  • Changing out the tires need tips on proper grease

Hey guys im changing out the tires on my XJ and im wondering what type of grease i should use to relubricate the gears on the shaft drive and what kind of grease i should use on the axle. The manual states use a light coating of lithium base grease to the final gear case splines and rear wheel hub splines. what brand or type do you recommend? Can I get it at the regular auto parts store? Thanks

any decent automotive grease will do, read you repair manual, just stay away from crisco or lard

Molly B. Do not mix grease types. I use molly because that is what is called for most of the time and it has many good properties

I am not sure if that is always what it is. I have been told by many people that you are not supposed to mix grease types.

It's always a good idea to clean up as much of the old as you can since grease tends to trap metal frags and contaminants.

                Molyebdenum Disulfide

I'm not a grease wizard by any stretch of the imagination but the factory recommends Molyebdenum Disulfide grease on the wheel bearings, drive shaft splines and other places.

Part of the lubrication properties of grease comes from the microscopic metal that is within and Moly is some slipery stuff. Other automotive grease blends use metals such as aluminum and that might not be well suited for some reason.

Moly Disulfide is readily available at auto parts stores and I would take care to clean all traces of old lubrication from bearings and joints before applying new grease. Dis the same thing a few weeks ago when I changed tires and that is a great time to do this.

                Have fun.

And I have to be different! I use Redline or Mobil One synthetic grease for everything. I've never had a problem, and it is more waterproof than standard wheel bearing grease, and has a higher drop point.

see that is why I use molly b also. It is recomended by the factory. I think it has greater strength against corrosion or something.

yeah i had a can of that; that literally lasted for 20 years, the xs 1100 used up the last bit, i recently bought synthetic blend, i trust it to do the job...
