who do you have insurance through?! the cheapest I can find is through geico but they still want $190 a year just for basic liability. when I was 18 or 19 I had a company that got me $75 a year but my agent can't do insurance through them any more >< THANKS!!

I use a company called Direct Insurance. $52/yr for both bikes, liability only. I'm not sure what states they're licensed in, but they were hands down the cheapest in my area.

Insurance threads seem to come up every spring. A couple comments.

First, any insurance company has to be licensed to do business from the state you live in. Depending on the sate requirements, rates will vary considerably between states from the same company.

Second, minimum insurance values vary from state to state. When I first came to Colorado they mandated unisured motorist coverage, later dropped, but it made rates higher than I had paid in other states.

Third, many companies offer discounts if you have either multiple vehicles or other policies - home owner's in paticular - with them. When I came to Colorado I tried State Farm, they would not insure the bike unless I had another policy with them.

4th, try to get exactly what you want. For example, if you have medical coverage from work, get a policy without medical coverage. If you don't think you would fix the bike after a severe accident, go with a high deductible. If you do not carry a passenger, say so and get solo coverage instead of rider and passenger. Try to tailor the policy to your particular situation.

Point is that the rates you see quoted in this thread will have very little to do with what you will pay in your state, although it will give you names of companies to contact. I currently have Progressive as that is about the only carrier that is licensed in Colorado and will issue a policy without having other vehicles / home policies as well.

I am not a fan of Progressive, but my choices are very limited so that is what I have. Cost is around $92.00 per year (solo rider), but I also carry higher than minimum coverage, particularly property damage. This raises the premium a few bucks. However, they do include helmet replacement cost in the event of a claim, first time I've seen that in a policy.

        Good luck.

I pay $140 a year through a company called Dairyland. It's a subsidiary of Sentry. My rates seems kind of high, except that is liability for four motorcycles and includes coverage for my 18-year-old son (a worse speeder than me) on all four. Alone I was paying $46 a year for liability only on three bikes.

Geico at 81 bucks per year........ this is my first year with them since 1989....

When I moved from OK to TX I tried to stay with State Farm / huge discount on years of activity etc etc..... they aren't exactly what I'd call ethically spotless but, oh well. The agent in TX wouldn't insure the bike for less than 190~ish / six months, liability only. I had been paying 38 / year in OK. I had at once (prior to the flood) paid just under 200 for 4 grand in full coverage.... until I tried to make a claim...... yep SF stiffed me..... long story.

Pay what is best and get what ya gotta have........ I am beginning to think all insurance companies are as crooked as my Boa Constrictor. (But, at least he is honest)

I am with Allstate and pay about $250 a year. But then I carry uninsured mororist coverage, medical coverage and higher limits than the great state (cough) of Louisiana requires.

guess it varies state to state

I have Progressive, and carry a lot of ins because of rallys and the whatnot, so it is over 1k for the 3 bikes.

I had Gieco, which was less, but would not cover anything if I went over 500 miles in a day, or was participating in an event that was over 500 miles in a day.

I didn't like that. Paid more to get Progressive, they don't care how much I ride.
