  • drain screws on petcock

On my XJ 1100 the left side petcock leaks out of one of the drain screws. The screw is toward the primary position of the petcock.
I removed the screw after trying to tighten it to stop the leaking.
When removed I added a small O ring hoping that might help.
It's a small leak but it is getting the side of air cleaner access
    wet with gasoline.

MY question is can I remove that screw and put JB Weld in the opening to stop the leaking, or put JB Weld on the screw and
    thread it back in?

Drain screws are they? I did wonder WTF they were for last week when I was fighting with a fuel mystery of my own.
No, not JB Weld, it's kinda permanent.
Remove the screw and dry up the area with an air line. Put the screw back in with a smear of gasket sealant on the threads.

      drain screws

That is what the manual calls them---problem with putting the sealant in is when putting the O ring on I stripped the threads.

I guess I can try and re tap the threads--- man is that going to be a mess trying to keep metal filings out of the petcock valve.

      Thanks

        Take it off!

        Hi dodjh,
please don't try to fix that tap in situ.
Take it off, take it apart and try your fix on the bare casting, then you can wash out the metal shavings with a spraycan of carb cleaner. Re-tap as close to the original as you can and seal a new fastener in there.

          Fred,

I will do it the way you suggested---thanks for getting me on track. I've not been much on doing something half way---like to do it right and know I did the best I could.
