How do I get my idle down when the screw under the carbs has clearance but the idle still is around 1500 to 2000.

The carbs are clean and I have a new throttle cable

make sure there is some slack in the cable. There is an adjustment at the upper end of the cable.

Ditto! Also make sure there is no hose clamp obstructing movement.

            idle follow up

I have been trying, unsuccesfully to do that. Also reading the manuel and archives on this forum. I am using the sychonizing tool made from an aquarium 4 valve unit and 2 1/2" PVC pipe and
            vacuum guage.

I am using the copper pipe tread all and gas line Y I C S
tool for closing vacuum in ports between cyclinders.

First I try 1 and 2 with the adjusting screw between them.
When I get the same reading by turning one valve on and off and then the other valve on to see what it reads compared to #1. After getting close to same reading I go to #4. I check it and then close valve and open up #3 to see what it is. Closing #3 I open 4 and try to get it to 3. Haven't gotten past that point yet. Very concerned about Y I C S tool being hard to extract after done. It takes 7 to 10 mins to do this at high rpm's (1800 to 2200.) I did bench sychronize.

Where an I missing the mark?

              Hey Dodjh,

Try taking the cable off of the throttle actuator at the carbs, and see if the idle will drop down. If so, then you don't have enough slack in the cable from the handlebar, so the cable is holding the butterflies slightly open even though you have the idle screw backed out beyond contact!

I can't comment on the YICS tool, don't have an XJ! You are using a big fan in front of the engine during this process I hope??

                T.C.

I wasn't but have one set up now. The slack at the handle bar worked and idle is manageable now.

                Thanks
