    Hi iwould like to know if i can change the piston rings on my xs1100g with out removing the motor from the from the frame? Thanks

    Hi Badrap,
    Clymer's sez you can take the barrels off in-frame so I guess you can.

      Yes, you can. Just have to take the exhaust, carbs and head off, then split the cam chain. then the barrels lift right off.


      That is where I am right now, in my repairs.

        No need to split the cam chain unless you want to replace it. Come to think of it, if the rings are shot, chances are that the motor has very high miles? Might as well replace the chain.

        Before you pull the motor apart, tell us why you think the rings are bad. There may be another fix that will save you a lot of work.
