  • throttle shaft weld repair

I have a spare set of carbs . And it looks like stamped steel .where one of the throttle barrel goes it has an "ear" broken off .
Would think there must be a metal choice that wont rust to weld this back together ....

How would jb weld hold up for this ??

    Hi Bob,
you mean the little widget that connects each butterfly shaft to the next? They are (perhaps) 16ga steel pressings and they look kinda complicated to re-manufacture from flatstock. If you can re-make the missing ear and find an expert to TIG-weld it onto the part that's still there, mild steel sheet to match the existing is the only choice. You can get the repaired part electroplated with zinc to stop it rusting, do 'em all while you are at it.

Oh yeah, on a job like this, JB Weld would only stand up until the first time you moved the twistgrip.

      Hi Fred ,
Its the part where the throttle cable slips through to hook up the throttle cable barrel ...half moon ear was thin .

Was not sure if stainless wire would weld that up , with a piece of stainless ....lots of grades of stainless ....
its the same material as the butterfly parts you ...

I have a mig , tig and a torch . just need practice . been awhile...
been collecting tools for the shop , , ,

        welding technique

        Hi Bob,
you are the guy with MIG & TIG welders at home while I'm the guy with a 30 year old Lincoln buzzbox. It seems like I should be asking you how to make a precision stainless to mild steel transition weld.
I'm sure that you don't want the actual part to be fritzed up so I'd say, get some small scrap pieces of stainless and of mild steel and practice your transition welding techniques on them until you are sure you got it right.

          Hi Fred ,

I want it done yesterday , LOL .
I'm sure I can practice a bit first and get it . I dont mind having to do some grinding or drilling to get the hole to line up .
I have the tools , but not the practice.

Looking into all options , a guy at work suggested silver solder ..
that would be less heat and its pretty strong , just has to contain
          the barrel ....

I'll post picts when done ....

You could try alumiweld, as well. The parts have to be clean bare (unoxidized) metal for it to bond right, but once it does it holds well.
