  • Another Carb Question

John, or anyone, I just bought a set of carbs off of Ebay (260074724915) I think they are off a 1100 but maybe a XJ as it has cable choke. Did the XJ have a cable choke? Or are these carbs off something else?? I do hope they will fit my 1980 XS1100G. Any Carb Guru's out htere??? Thanks in advance, Kim

Kim, if the have a cable choke, then they would be for an XJ. Did you get my PM last night about the tang on the floats?

      John,
Yes, Thanks so much, What I want to do right now is just get a good known set of carbs to install, repair the coil pick-up wires for now and future problems and ride the crap out of her while I am in Okie June and July. Then at my leisure in Maine get the originals back up to speed, LOL. Could you look at the carbs on Ebay and tell me if they are in fact off a 1100, or could they be off a fj1200 or something else? I am not familier with those later models, LOL Either way I do think they will work. Kim

Thanks Wildkat, I don't think this is my prob but it very well could be. I have 4 new needle valves, and all looked ok last time I had the bowl's off. Also needle valves have new o'rings so doubt they are the culprit either. But they are definately flooding. Very very frustrating, but they will not kick my butt!!!! This bike will be resurrected one way or another!! Might have as much money invested in her as my Harley before I'm done though, LOL Kim

I want to talk about that neat lookin' arrow in the pics! Much more interesting.

I don't know, but the float type does not look right for the carb model... (Yeah, I know, go for the obvious) The needle is cockeyed in the seat as well. It won't seat properly in the seat that way! If that is the right float for that carb body, the seat is wrong.

That float looks like the brass ones that I have kicking around, and the seat is a screw in type that is found on the 78-79 carbs which did use the brass floats, but the pic was just meant to illustrate the cocking effect of the needle allowing the floats to hang too far and cause flooding when initially filling the bowls

                  inverted?

                  Hi Wildcat,
those float pix you posted; I dunno about brass floats because mine are those plastic guys but from looking at the angle at which the float plate hits the float needle, all sloped instead of square on, can that float have possibly been mounted upside down?

The floats on my XJ are plastic . Push in seats that have a little bracket and screw to hold it..

The picture looks like an ilistration of having the limiting tank missadjusted , the one with the cocked needle ...VS the good picture ...

I'm getting tired of floats , but yeah the arorws are pretty , LOL

                      Bob,
Yes mine are too on my 80 1100G, push in valves with o'rings and a little screw and clamp to hold in place. i am just not sure right now if i have defective seats, needle valves, or a cocked or jammed condition mentioned above. My valves and seats are brand new from Mikesxs. Will find out soon when i am here longer. kim

Just wondering out loud here, Those '80 and up float seats seem to be a real pain. The o-ring is a major weak point.

Has anyone looked into tapping the carb body to accept the earlier seats?

A local mechanic suggested to me that those plastic floats saturate with modern fuel and the float level needs to be reset to a lower fuel level. Do any of you have experience with this?

Another friend had brass floats put in his '85 FJ because of this.

I'm guessing if they get old they get mushy . I had one I replaced
because it crumbled with light scraping (partially).
The old gas in that carb was like petrified mallassas ...

Might be better to put the brass ones out of a spare in ...
I wouldnt think a new plastic one would be absorbant??

Last year there was a thread on brass floats not being consistant from one to the other . They were chucking them for the plastic???

I have a set of GSXR carbs and the whole float system is on a modular "tree" . Differant plastic that our XS/XJ's
